A controversial Nigerian blog, gistlover, was launched and registered in 2016. It is an independent digital news and entertainment platform with thousands of page views. The blog is known for its controversies and dragging of celebrities.
GistLover today has thousands of followers and has sparked a phenomenon that its fans believe is the work of a prominent Nollywood actress, but it remains anonymous.
The anonymous blog has targeted and dragged Oshiomhole, Omotola Jalade, Bobrisky, Nancy Isime, Blessing CEO, Tonto Dikeh, Sanwo Olu Jane Mena, and other prominent Nigerians.
At a time, nobody cared about Gistlover’s identity. Most of the followers enjoyed how others were dragged until it began affecting them and their favourite celebrities.
Celebrities such as Omotola Jalade, Bobrisky, Iyabo Ojo, and others have attempted to arrest or sue the mask blog in various ways but couldn’t.
Recently Gistlover listed out the names of celebrities who are allegedly homosexual in Nigeria. The list set social media on fire and sparked numerous reactions.
Gistlover said the celebrities involved are from all industries, including movies, music, media, social media, politics, business etc. The blogger has also promised a list of lesbian celebrities soon.
Some celebrities reacted to the accusation while some choose to keep mute. The impact of the list released by Gistlover is on the negative side: this could damage the reputation of the listed celebrities, causing fans and followers to see them in a different light.
One of the celebrities that reacted to the allegation was Yul, although he didn’t outrightly address the rumours, Yul shared a selfie video of himself admiring his looks on Instagram. In his caption, he talked about speaking on a gossip soon and asked his followers to give him more time.
He wrote “Una too like gossip. Relax. I’ll share the news soon. Maybe tomorrow.”
Another celebrity that reacted to the reports circulating online was Kunle Remi, who was equally alleged to be involved in homosexual activities alongside other celebrities in Nigeria.
Kunle Remi addressed the situation, clarifying that he prefers maintaining a positive atmosphere on his social media platforms. He made it known that his focus remains on love, light, and good vibes. The actor also expressed his determination to set boundaries, stating that he will not hesitate to block anyone who brings negativity or darkness to his page, regardless of their relationship with him.
“This page is for love and light and good vibes. I’m not desperate for followers or engagement. If you come with darkness and negativity from a blog to my page, DM or phone I will block you. Be it a friend, fan or family”. Remi also wrote.
Whether the list is genuine or not, it is an invasion of privacy of the celebrities mentioned and could affect them negatively. Interference with one’s privacy can result in different types of harm, such as emotional distress, reputational damage and humiliation.
Also one’s mental health needs to be considered, as it may have a damaging effect on the career of the celebrities in question.
