Nigerian skit maker, comedian and actress, Kemi Ikuseedun, better known as Mummy Wa or Kenzie mama has spoken about her experience with sexual harassment in the movie industry.
The skit maker disclosed this during a chat on ‘WithChude podcast’ with Chude Jideonwo. She said she experienced unwelcome sexual approaches from filmmakers while trying to establish her career.
Mummy wa stated that she turned down the offers because she knew they wouldn’t guarantee her the role she desired.
“Behind the scenes, a lot of people are asking for things. They are requesting for a whole lot of things that I cannot do.
“Where do I want to start from? Me that I’m already coming from a place where they tell me ‘this thing will not work’. How many people do I want to sleep with?
“To be honest, you might actually sleep with somebody in the industry and you will still not blow with the role they will give you. I saw a lot of men. But guess what? Even the slim ones that don’t have anything, they are still asking for things from them.
“No woman is free. No woman is immune. But I can’t do it.” She said.
Mummy Wa, giving a reality check about Nollywood, revealed that this unwanted advance is a common obstacle a lot of upcoming actresses face.
Ikuseedun’s story speaks volumes of the choices many actresses are faced with. Her story shows the strength needed to thrive in Nollywood and points to deep seated issues that should lead the industry into talking.
Kemi Ikuseedun became famous in 2023, following her appearance on Mr Macaroni’s skits. She is also known for sharing comedy skits on different social media platforms such as TikTok, YouTube and Instagram.
Mummy Wa had released a movie entitled, ‘My Sunshine.’ The movie was debut on October 4, 2024, on her YouTube channel. The movie brought together a unique blend of romance, friendship and inspiration drawn from Korean films. It was Directed by popular filmmaker, JJC Skillz, and produced by her, the movie promised to captivate fans of Korean cinema while adding a fresh twist to Nigerian storytelling.
The movie was a star studded with cast including, Ikuseedun, Mr Macaroni, Chinedu Ikedieze also known as Aki, Juliana Olayode and Diva Gold, among others.
