The Badagry Angels have emerged victorious in the Lagos U-15 Softball Championship, held at the Badagry Grammar School playing field.
The five-day tournament, which ran from November 11 to 15, 2024, showcased the talents of eight teams vying for the title in a bid to promote grassroots sports development in Lagos State.
In a dominant performance during the grand finale, the Badagry Angels outclassed Rak Angels with an emphatic 9-1 victory. Their skill, strategy, and teamwork shone brightly, earning them the coveted championship title.
Driving Grassroots Sports Development
Speaking at the medal presentation, the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Lekan Fatodu, underscored the importance of the tournament in advancing sports in suburban areas. Represented by the Director of Sports Development, Travih Nunayon, Fatodu emphasized the initiative’s alignment with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s inclusivity agenda.
“We are committed to identifying sports peculiar to different communities and providing opportunities for participation. This championship is a testament to our dedication to nurturing talents and promoting sports at the grassroots level,” he remarked.
Fatodu revealed that the success of the tournament followed six months of rigorous training for coaches and players. “We’ve worked tirelessly to form clubs, engage students, and increase interest in softball. This is just the beginning of a long-term vision to expand the sport’s reach and impact,” he added.
A Platform for Budding Talents
Saidi Olanrewaju, a member of the Lagos State Sports Commission Board, highlighted the tournament’s role in the THEMES Plus Agenda of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration. “This event is a deliberate effort to reinvigorate sports and youth development. It provides a platform for budding talents to showcase their skills and prepares them for future opportunities,” Olanrewaju stated.
He assured the audience of the state’s continued commitment to exposing young talents to competitive platforms, helping them refine their skills and achieve their aspirations.
Players’ Excitement and Aspirations
Captain of the Badagry Angels, Ifeoluwa Oluwafemi, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the championship. “This tournament has been an incredible experience. I’m grateful to the Lagos State Government, the Sports Commission, and the Association for this platform. My dream is to compete professionally and showcase my talent on the global stage,” said the third baseman.

In addition to the team awards, individual players were recognized for their exceptional performances:
Best Catcher: Alia Olatunde (Rak Angels)
Best Pitcher: Koku Yemaise (SHS)
Best In-Fielder: Kuton Seseyon (Badagry Grammar School)
Rak Angels secured second place with their commendable performance, while Kosoko Team claimed the third spot.
