South Africans have reacted to Chidimma Adetshina finishing as the first runner-up at the 73rd Miss Universe competition held in Mexico City.
The grand finale of the 73rd Miss Universe competition concluded on Sunday morning in Mexico City. As the first runner-up, she was named Miss Universe Africa and Oceania.
Other top contenders included participants from Bolivia, Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Russia, Chile, Thailand, Canada, and Peru, who all secured spots in the top 12.
Miss Universe Nigeria was given the continental title as the highest placing African at the contest. Adetshina is the first Miss Universe Nigeria to make it to the top 2 on the global stage.
As congratulatory messages continue to pour in from Nigerians as well as Africans, mixed reactions have trailed her win among South Africans.
While some attributed her success to her education in their country, others described her as a ‘first loser’, expressing their pleasure that she didn’t win the coveted title.
Meanwhile, some of Chidimma’s biggest South African supporters, including Thuso Van Zyl described her success as a triumph of good over evil.

Adetshina represented Taraba State and won Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, on the 31st of August 2024 at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. She competed against 24 other contestants, the event was broadcast on GOtv and YouTube. Adetshina proceeded to represent Nigeria at Miss Universe in Mexico, in November 2024.
