Nigerian singer and songwriter Tiwatope Omolara Savage professionally known as Tiwa Savage has emphasized on the importance of artistes building genuine relationships with their fans, expressing how such connections can help their music excel.
Appearing on a recent episode of the Shopping The Sneakers podcast, the singer noted that having a strong relationship with fans allows artists to connect with other sides of an artiste’s life, including their lifestyle.
She said: “It’s not just about the music; it’s your fanbase and your brand.
You’ve to think of your fashion. You’ve to be relatable. A lot of times, artiste are just putting out music; they are not really connecting with the fans.”
The singer praised her colleagues Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy, stating that their long lasting popularity is due to the fact that they are able to maintain strong relationships with their fans.
She added: “If you look at Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy, they have established relationships with their fanbases. They love their lifestyles. Whether they are dropping a song or not, they are in the conversation. So it’s really important to build a fanbase. You are only as good as strong as your team.”
Tiwa Savage’s contributions to the Nigerian music industry have earned her several achievements. She won Best African Act at the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards in November 2018, becoming the first woman to win the category.
In 2010, she collaborated with Fantasia on the song ‘Collard Greens & Cornbread’ earned the American recording artist a Grammy nomination.
She has also been involved in many youth empowerment and breast cancer screening projects across Nigeria and helped raise money for an organisation that builds schools in her hometown.
