Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has spoken about Victor Osimhen’s big missed chance at the end of regular time in Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup playoff match against Gabon.
Osimhen failed to score from close range after receiving a brilliant pass from Wilfred Ndidi. The miss meant the match went into extra time.
However, the 26-year-old striker made up for it by scoring twice in extra time, helping Nigeria secure a 4-1 victory.
Troost-Ekong said the team encouraged Osimhen immediately after the miss.
“When I saw him running toward the goalkeeper, I thought he would score. After he missed, we tried to encourage him so he wouldn’t feel bad,” he told ESPN Africa.
Samuel Chukwueze also commented on the missed chance.
“This is football sometimes these things happen. Everyone knows he can score that kind of goal, and he later gave us two goals. It was fantastic,” Chukwueze said.
