The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly announced plans to initiate nationwide protests with effect from October 3.
The NLC national president, Joe Ajaero, conveyed this decision during a virtual National Executive Council meeting.
Ajaero disclosed that discussions were held with TUC officials to strategize on their collective response to the government’s actions.

This decision is a result of what the labor unions perceive as the government’s failure to effectively implement policies aimed at alleviating the hardships faced by Nigerians following the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
A source told newsmen that some NLC members initially objected to collaborating with the TUC but it appears that the prevailing circumstances have compelled them to unite in pursuit of their demands.
“Initially some members did not want us to work with the TUC but as of now, we don’t have a choice. The government has not been proactive. So it is going to be a definite action this time around,” the source said.
Top Society had reported how the unions had previously issued a 21-day ultimatum to the government, which elapsed without their demands being addressed. In preparation for the indefinite strike, the NLC had embarked on a two-day nationwide warning strike on September 5 and 6.
Among their demands are wage increases, implementation of palliative measures, tax exemptions, and allowances for public sector workers, as well as a review of the minimum wage.
President Bola Tinubu had previously established committees to address these issues, but the deadlines for their actions expired without progress.
