EU Foreign Policy Chief Urges “Humanitarian Pause” to Enable Aid Access to Gaza

The top official of the European Union has urged for an acceleration in the entry of crucial resources into Gaza, citing Israel’s blockade and continuous attacks that have led to a severe humanitarian catastrophe.

Josep Borrell informed the press that during a foreign affairs meeting on Monday, ministers of member states will deliberate on the possibility of a “humanitarian pause” to streamline the delivery of assistance to the Palestinian region.

“The most important thing is to call for humanitarian support to go into Gaza.

“We, the European Union, we have increased our support, but there are queues and queues of trucks waiting to enter. They have to enter, and they had to bring in things that are badly needed,” Borrell stressed.

Over the past weekend, Palestinian and Egyptian authorities reported that two groups of aid trucks transporting relief supplies successfully entered Gaza.

Nevertheless, various human rights organizations cautioned that the current crisis requires a significantly more substantial response. With over 2 million people facing a shortage of drinking water and the looming threat of starvation, the situation has reached catastrophic levels. Hospitals are grappling with acute shortages, and in some instances, have resorted to using ice cream trucks as makeshift morgues due to overcrowding.

The complete blockade by Israel, hindering the entry of food, fuel, and water into Gaza, has severely impeded the supply of electricity to vital infrastructure, such as desalination plants and the strip’s only power plant. Amnesty International characterized Israel’s actions as “collective punishment,” deeming it a war crime against Palestinian civilians.

Borrell stressed the critical necessity of fuel supplies to ensure the functioning of Gaza’s power stations and desalination facilities. Additionally, he insisted that the individuals taken hostage by Hamas during the lethal incursion into Israel on October 7 must be freed.

“It is part of any step towards de-escalation and we have to start thinking of how to revive the political process.”

According to an aid worker and two security sources who spoke to Reuters, a third group of aid trucks arrived at the Rafah crossing from Egypt on Monday, heading for the blockaded Gaza Strip.

Over the weekend, a total of 34 trucks passed through, with a similar number of trucks in Monday’s convoy, as indicated by the aid worker and security sources. UN officials have stressed that approximately 100 trucks would be required daily to fulfill the critical requirements in Gaza.

In the meantime, the Israeli military has alleged that it targeted a “suspicious aerial object” attempting to breach Israel’s airspace from the direction of Lebanon.

Mohammad Shtayyeh, the Palestinian Prime Minister, stated that the people of Gaza are facing the brutality of the Israeli military, referring to it as a “murderous and criminal machine.”

During a cabinet meeting in Ramallah, as reported by Al Jazeera, he emphasized that the lives of numerous children and patients in Gaza’s hospitals are under threat.

In the Gaza Strip, numerous civilians, including children, have lost their lives due to Israeli airstrikes that have leveled residential areas.

Health authorities in the territory, controlled by Hamas, claim that over 4,600 individuals have perished, marking this conflict as the deadliest among the five conflicts Israel has engaged in against militants since 2007. The recent surge in violence was instigated by a hostile incident within Israel on October 7, claiming the lives of over 1,400 Israelis.

Obtaining information from Gaza, which remains under blockade, is challenging, but there are reports detailing some of the individuals who have been purportedly killed.
