The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has unveiled plans for a potential gas exploration and production partnership with Argentina, marking a significant step toward enhancing Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Sector. The announcement was made via the Commission’s official Twitter handle on Wednesday, November 22.
In a statement released, the NUPRC revealed that it will collaborate with Argentina on gas exploration and production, responding to the expressed interest from the South American nation. This development is seen as a milestone for the Commission in attracting increased investments to Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Sector.
According to the statement, Mr. Alejandro Herrero, the Argentinian Ambassador to Nigeria, conveyed his country’s keen interest in participating in gas exploration and production within Nigeria during his visit to the NUPRC. In response, Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, the Chief Executive of the Commission, emphasized the commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Sector.
Komolafe highlighted the Commission’s robust regulations and policies designed to facilitate smoother business operations in alignment with global standards. Notably, Nigeria’s petroleum fiscal systems now favor production-sharing contracts (PSC) as a fresh model for agreements related to oil and gas resource exploration and production.

In addition to the partnership with Argentina, Komolafe announced the Commission’s imminent plan to initiate the auction of uncommitted gas fields in Nigeria within the next few weeks.
The development aligns with Nigeria’s broader initiative, the “Decade of Gas,” led by Ekperikpe Ekpo, the Minister for Petroleum Resources (Gas). As part of this initiative, Nigeria aims to significantly increase gas production to meet various domestic needs, including clean cooking, fuel for vehicles, industrial purposes, and electricity. The focus also extends to exporting gas to Europe, where there is anticipated high demand.
Ekpo envisions that by 2030, Nigeria should achieve a daily gas production of 5.5 billion cubic feet, equivalent to 57 billion cubic meters annually. His strategy revolves around tapping into Nigeria’s untapped gas reserves, a significant but underutilized resource that has the potential to transform the nation.
Central to Ekpo’s vision is a comprehensive plan that goes beyond profit-driven motives. The framework emphasizes environmental sustainability, aiming for increased revenue alongside broader access to energy for Nigeria’s population. Ultimately, the initiative seeks to harness the country’s gas potential for economic growth and improved energy access for its people.
