Protesters have reoccupied the streets of Kano following the recent Appeal Court decision to uphold the tribunal’s verdict sacking Governor Abba Yusuf. Despite police efforts to disperse them, the demonstrators persist, standing their ground and regrouping.
This resurgence comes after protests erupted across the state on Monday, which were initially quelled by law enforcement.
Protesters were heard chanting in Hausa, “We will not accept it”; “We will not allow it”; “Kano belongs to Abba”; “Our mandate must be restored”; “Injustice exposed in CTC” among others.
The Appeal Court panel, echoing the tribunal’s decision led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay two weeks ago, ruled against Yusuf, reducing his contested votes due to alleged irregularities.
Yusuf, a member of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), saw 165,663 of his votes invalidated by the Lower Court, citing issues with signatures and stamps from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). His revised tally stands at 853,939, while his All Progressives Congress (APC) rival, Nasir Ganuwa, maintains his lead with 890,705 votes.

Expressing discontent, Governor Yusuf rejected the tribunal’s decision as “unfair” and a “miscarriage of justice,” prompting an appeal to the higher court. Unfortunately for Yusuf, the Appeal Court sided with his opponent, deepening the political crisis in Kano.
Despite police warnings against public gatherings and protests related to the Appeal Court ruling, the protesters remain undeterred.
