The Nigerian Senate has announced that it will conduct a screening of Olayemi Cardoso, the former Chairman of the Board of Citi Bank Nigeria, for the position of Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

This event is scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

The Senate is not only focusing on Cardoso but will also thoroughly vet four other nominees for the crucial roles of Deputy Governors at the CBN. These deputy governors will collaborate with Cardoso in overseeing the operations and policies of the apex bank for the next five years.

This important decision was conveyed in an official statement released by the Media Office of the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele. The Senate’s decision to screen all the nominees comes as it resumes its legislative activities following its annual recess.

The statement read,

“The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria will resume plenary on Tuesday, September 26. We will consider the screening of Dr. Cardoso at the Committee of the whole.

“Dr. Cardoso will be screened alongside four deputy governors namely Mrs. Emem Nnana Usoro, Mr. Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo, Mr. Philip Ikeazor, and Dr. Bala M. Bello.

“Besides, the Senate has scheduled to screen the ministerial nominees – Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim and Mr. Ayodele Olawande, respectively designated as Minister of Youth and Minister of State for Youth on October 3.”

This development comes in the wake of President Tinubu’s approval of Olayemi Cardoso’s nomination as the next Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. President Tinubu has also given his nod to the nominations of four individuals as Deputy Governors, each for an initial term of five years, pending confirmation by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
