Nigerian actor, producer and director Kunle Afolayan has announced the death of his mother, Omoladun Ayanladun Afolayan
He shared the news on his social media page (Instagram) early on November 2, 2024.
The actor in his post included several photos that captured fun and joyful moments with his mother, along with images of her with her grandchildren.
He expressed his sadness in the caption, stating that it is difficult to come to terms with her loss, but he acknowledged that she had a fulfilling life. He also requested prayers for her.
“It is hard to accept but she surely lived a good life👼 Our mother Maami Omoladun Ayanladun Afolayan has gone to rest. (1943-2024) She’s survived by children and grandchildren. Please put us in your prayers. Omo re a gbeyin gbogbo wa,” he wrote
Kunle Afolayan is credited for elevating the quality of Nollywood movies through larger budgets, shooting on 35mm, releasing in cinemas, and improving cliché Nollywood storylines. The actor started his film career as an actor in the 1999 political drama Saworoide, Afolayan made his directorial debut in 2006 with Irapada, a Nigerian supernatural thriller, which won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Film in an African Language. Afolayan appeared at the Subversive Film Festival in 2011, representing the Nigerian film industry. The film Phone Swap premiered in France at the first edition of NollywoodWeek Paris and won the Public Choice Award in May 2013.
The actor struck a deal with Netflix in 2021 to make three feature films. The first included a screen adaptation of Sefi Atta’s book ‘Swallow’. He and the writer penned the script, which had a major twist from the original story. The movie engulfs around a woman who begins to consider going into drug trafficking in Lagos in the mid-’80s.
