Sam Altman, the former CEO of OpenAI, has swiftly found a new role with tech giant Microsoft just 48 hours after his unexpected departure from the artificial intelligence research company.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced on X (formerly Twitter) that Altman would lead a new advanced AI research team at Microsoft. The move comes amid speculation about Altman’s next steps following his sudden ousting from OpenAI, where he played a pivotal role in the development and promotion of the widely used ChatGPT bot.
Nadella expressed confidence in Altman’s leadership capabilities, signaling Microsoft’s commitment to advancing artificial intelligence research. The announcement comes as Microsoft continues to invest significantly in AI technologies.
Meanwhile, Emmett Shear, former CEO of Twitch, will take the helm at OpenAI as the new CEO. Shear referred to the opportunity as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” but did not shy away from criticizing the way Altman’s departure was handled, stating that it was “handled very badly” and had “seriously damaged our trust.”
“The board did *NOT* remove Sam over any specific disagreement on safety, their reasoning was completely different from that. I’m not crazy enough to take this job without board support for commercializing our awesome models”, he wrote on X.
Altman’s dismissal from OpenAI on Friday, citing a loss of confidence from the board, sent shockwaves through the industry. The sudden move triggered support from various Silicon Valley figures, with Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO, referring to Altman as a “hero” who had “changed our collective world forever.”
There were speculations about Altman potentially returning to OpenAI or even establishing a rival company, which fueled concerns within the tech industry about the potential departure of top talent from OpenAI.
Instead, Altman chose to join Microsoft, a strategic move considering the company’s substantial investment in OpenAI and its ongoing commitment to AI research and development.

The new OpenAI CEO, Shear, assured employees that an independent investigator would be hired to examine Altman’s departure, addressing concerns about transparency and the management team’s stability.
Altman, in response to Nadella’s announcement, posted on X, stating, “The mission continues,” indicating his dedication to advancing AI research.
As the dust settles from Altman’s abrupt exit from OpenAI, the tech industry will be closely watching how these developments reshape the landscape of artificial intelligence research and the dynamics between major players in the field.
