British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday executed a major reshuffle, appointing former leader David Cameron as the new Foreign Minister. The decision followed the dismissal of interior minister Suella Braverman, whose criticism of the police had strained Sunak’s authority.

This strategic move is seen as an attempt by Sunak to introduce a more centrist and experienced figure, diverging from the right-wing faction that supported Braverman. With Sunak’s party trailing behind the Labour Party ahead of an anticipated election next year, the reshuffle aims to revitalize the Conservative Party’s image.
The return of Cameron reignites the contentious Brexit debate, as he led the 2016 referendum on European Union membership and faced criticism from the right for advocating to remain. The timing of Cameron’s appointment suggests Sunak’s focus on governance rather than pandering to specific party factions.
The reshuffle gained urgency after Braverman’s unauthorized article accused the police of “double standards” at protests, leading to nearly 150 arrests during a pro-Palestinian demonstration and a far-right counter protest. This defiance prompted Sunak to take swift action, implementing a long-planned reshuffle to consolidate his allies and remove underperforming ministers.
While the removal of Braverman was anticipated, Cameron’s appointment stirred surprise within the Conservative Party. Welcomed by centrist lawmakers, it was met with disdain by some on the right who dubbed it the ultimate “Brexit surrender.”
Cameron expressed his readiness for the new role, stating that, in a time of global change, it is crucial for the country to stand by allies, strengthen partnerships, and ensure its voice is heard.

“Though I may have disagreed with some individual decisions, it is clear to me that Rishi Sunak is a strong and capable prime minister, who is showing exemplary leadership at a difficult time,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Cameron, absent from politics since 2016, is set to make a return to government through an appointment to the upper house of parliament, the House of Lords.
