Nigerian Afrobeats icon David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido has come under heavy backlash over his recent comment on advising Nigerians in America and Black Americans against relocating to Nigeria.
The singer urged the black Americans, especially Nigerians not to return home, mentioning the country’s current economic distress. This he said appearing on The Big Homies House podcast.
The singer’s comment sparked guesses that some black Americans were considering leaving the United States following the electoral victory of the US President-elect, Donald Trump.
According to reports, Africans in America are concerned that potential policies of the President elect may not favour them.
Davido addressing this said: “Leave America and go where? Go back where? It’s not cool back home. My country now, the economy is in shambles. ’The exchange rate is messed up. A lot of stuff not going well. The economy is not just good anymore. The pil prices are too high. Imagine a country that produces oil. We produce the oil and we paying more money for oil than a country that imports the oil”
The remark made by the singer attracted mixed reactions from some citizens, while some asked the singer to immediately retract his statement, while some Nigerians agreed with him.
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, (APC)Joe Igbokwe in a post on his official Facebook page advised the singer to take back the statement.
Igbokwe said, “My In-law Davido has made me sad by telling the world in America that Nigeria’s economy is in shambles.
“This is very sad. I will advise him to retract the statement asap. Nigeria made Davido. QED!!!”
Inibehe Effiong wrote, “Davido is entitled to his opinion about the state of affairs in Nigeria. In any event, he said the truth. Those attacking him are not serious people.”
Some described his comment as disappointing and unpatriotic urging the music star to use his platform to promote a positive image of Nigeria.
Reacting to the backlash in a tweet on Davido said a prayer for Nigeria in a now-viral post.
He tweeted: “God bless Nigeria 🇳🇬.”
