The Delta State Government, led by Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has bolstered security efforts by donating 31 operational vehicles to the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies operating in the state.
The vehicles were officially presented to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Monday in Asaba, as part of efforts to enhance the joint security initiative, now rebranded as “Operation Delta Sweep.”
During the presentation, Governor Oborevwori emphasized that the donation was a response to the increasing insecurity across the country. He urged security agencies to collaborate and share intelligence for more effective operations.
“In my MORE Agenda, I pledged to prioritize peace and security in Delta State. As part of this commitment, we are rebranding the former ‘Delta Hawk’ initiative into ‘Operation Delta Sweep,’ reflecting our renewed focus and strategy,” the governor stated.
He highlighted that security is essential for development, saying, “Without security, meaningful development is impossible. Our goal is to create an environment that attracts investors and improves the quality of life for our citizens while fostering harmony across the state.”
A Coordinated Effort Against Crime
Operation Delta Sweep, established on December 10, 2020, as a response to rising violent crimes, is a joint security task force comprising the Nigerian Army, Police Force, Air Force, Navy, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Civil Defence Corps. The initiative has made significant strides in combating crimes such as illegal oil bunkering, kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, and drug-related offenses.
Governor Oborevwori noted that the 31 newly donated vehicles—23 pickups and eight Sienna wagons—added to the four Hilux vehicles previously delivered, bring the task force’s fleet to 66 vehicles. These vehicles are expected to enhance daily patrols, particularly during the Ember Months.
“This contribution will boost the morale of our security personnel and further motivate them to ensure Delta State remains safe. We remain committed to providing the necessary support for a secure and peaceful environment,” he added.
Commendation from the IGP
Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun lauded Governor Oborevwori for his unwavering support for security initiatives in the state. He praised the governor’s leadership and dedication, especially in managing recent nationwide protests effectively.
“I am truly impressed by the strides being made in Delta State. This donation of 31 brand-new operational vehicles is a testament to your commitment to the safety and well-being of the people. Your support for the police and other security agencies is exceptional,” the IGP stated.
He assured that the vehicles would be deployed immediately to enhance operational effectiveness under Operation Delta Sweep.
Fostering Police-Public Relations
Governor Oborevwori also attended the opening of the Police Public Relations Officers and Communication Experts Conference in Asaba. He underscored the importance of accurate information, particularly in countering misinformation on social media that often misrepresents Delta State.
“As Police Public Relations Officers, your role is crucial in fostering transparency and improving public trust. Effective communication is key to bridging the gap between the police and the community, showcasing the commendable work you are doing,” the governor noted.
Declaring the conference open, the IGP reaffirmed the Nigerian Police Force’s commitment to fairness, accountability, and amicable conflict resolution. He also recognized the media as a vital partner in shaping public perception and promoting transparency.
This comprehensive approach to security, including enhanced communication and logistical support, reflects Delta State’s commitment to ensuring safety and development for its residents.
