Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Valentin, the wife of Gabon’s deposed president Ali Bongo Ondimba, has been jailed following her house arrest, which began after a military coup in late August.

Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Valentin, who was suspected of embezzling public funds, was reportedly imprisoned late on Wednesday, according to her lawyer, Francois Zimeray, who denounced the process as “arbitrary and illegal.”

On September 28, Bongo’s wife was charged with money laundering, forgery, and falsification of records. She had been under house arrest in Libreville since the military coup that ousted her husband from the presidency.

The military alleges that the former head of state and his associates falsified election results, and they openly accuse Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Valentin of manipulating her husband since he suffered a severe stroke in 2018.
