#EndSARS: Renowned Nigerian social media influencer and skitmaker, Adebowale Adedeyo, widely recognized as Mr Macaroni, stood alongside a gathering of fellow Nigerians at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos on Friday, marking the poignant third anniversary of the tragic shootings that occurred during the #EndSARS protest on October 20, 2020.
Despite the solemn commemoration, the area was marked by a substantial deployment of law enforcement, with the presence of Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, and other high-ranking officers. It is worth noting that the Lagos State Police Command had earlier cautioned against any assembly at the Lekki tollgate.
The #EndSARS movement initially emerged as a resounding public outcry against police brutality, extrajudicial killings, extortion, and abuse of power, particularly by members of the now-dissolved Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
The protests, initially peaceful, spurred the Nigerian government to disband the notorious SARS unit. However, the situation deteriorated as the demonstrations were marred by violence orchestrated by miscreants who vandalized law enforcement stations, public infrastructure, and launched assaults on both officers and civilians.
The tragic climax of the protest unfolded on October 20 when Nigerian Army personnel opened fire on the demonstrators, leading to the loss of life and severe injuries among the predominantly youthful protestors.
