Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has made an important proclamation by designating August 20 as Isese Day, a significant cultural observance, within the state. This decision aims to honor and celebrate the indigenous religious and spiritual practices of the Yoruba people, known as “Isese” or “Ifa” religion, which holds a vital place in the region’s heritage.

In line with this declaration, Governor Makinde has taken the initiative to mark the inaugural celebration of Isese Day by declaring Monday, August 21, 2023, as an official public holiday. This notable step signifies the state’s commitment to preserving and acknowledging its rich cultural diversity and historical traditions.

The decision to establish August 20 as Isese Day in Oyo State is officially documented in a circular that bears the signature of the Secretary to the Oyo State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo. This circular serves as a formal announcement and confirmation of the state’s recognition and celebration of Isese Day.

This significant development follows closely after a request made by the state House of Assembly to the governor, urging him to grant approval for the designation of August 20 as Isese Day on an annual basis. The responsiveness of the state government to this request demonstrates a keen willingness to engage with and acknowledge the cultural and religious aspirations of its citizens.

In the circular, Governor Seyi Makinde encourages traditional worshippers in the state to utilize the occasion of Isese Day to engage in prayer. The focus of these prayers is directed towards fostering peace, unity, and stability, not only within the boundaries of Oyo State but also extending to the entirety of the country.

By granting approval for Isese Day and explicitly encouraging prayers for peace and unity, the Governor underscores his commitment to inclusivity and respect for all religious practices present within the state. This step emphasizes the importance of recognizing and valuing the diversity of beliefs and traditions that contribute to the cultural fabric of Oyo State, reinforcing a sense of belonging and understanding among its residents.
