In a move to address the escalating issue of fake news, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, has earmarked a substantial sum of N138,066,187 for initiatives aimed at combating misinformation and enhancing media activities.

This allocation is detailed in the 2024 Appropriation Bill currently under consideration by the National Assembly.

The push against fake news gained prominence under the tenure of former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. In a 2021 interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, Mohammed emphasized the evolution of fake news in Nigeria from the conventional to “deep” fake news, which he argued was being strategically deployed to undermine the government and its officials.

Mohammed expressed concern that what initially started with lesser-known online publications had expanded to include reputable sources and mainstream media. He warned of sanctions for individuals found guilty of propagating false information.

The 2024 budget outlines various allocations reflecting the government’s multifaceted approach to tackle misinformation.

Notably, N24.5 million has been allocated for a “special enlightenment campaign on government’s programmes and policies,” including testimonial series to assess the impact of government policies on citizens.

The breakdown of the budget also reveals N40 million set aside for the production of calendars, a tool that can be utilized for disseminating information. Additionally, N30 million has been allocated for external publicity and engagement with foreign media, showcasing the government’s commitment to a global outreach.

Recognizing the importance of media interactions, N20.7 million has been voted for ministers, influencers, and analysts to engage on both print and social media platforms. This expenditure aims to ensure a comprehensive dissemination of information to the public.

The government’s proactive stance extends to the realm of social media, with N21.7 million allocated for the development of social media platforms and networking with other digital platforms.
