Kidnappers have reportedly abduct people conveying corpse from Lagos to Enugu, seize the corpse and demand N50 million ransom.
The bandits were said to have kidnapped the corpse and family members conveying the remains of the dead man to his country home in Ameze Owerre, Umabor community in the Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu.
The kidnappers have reached out to the family of the deceased and demanded a ransom of N50 million.
Although the police in Enugu have stated that there was no such information before the command, reports claimed that the remains of one Mr Ugwuanyi Israel, who died in Lagos were taken away alongside some family members at Umuoka in the Udi local government of Enugu when they were conveying the body to his community.
According to reports, the gun-wielding kidnappers allegedly swooped on the family members and took them away along with the corpse.
A family member of the deceased said, “His corpse was on its way from Lagos yesterday (Sunday) when the vehicle conveying his body was halted by kidnappers and people in the vehicle alongside the driver were all kidnapped at Umuoka Udi LGA of Enugu State.
“The kidnappers have called the family and demanded a N50 million ransom.”
A former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof Chidi Odinkalu, also shared the report on his X, wrote:
“Israel Ugwuanyi died in Lagos. Yesterday, family members were conveying his remains to Ameze Owerre, Umabor community in Nsukka LGA of Enugu State when kidnappers abducted them & his dead body. They are demanding N50m in ransom.”
However, when the Enugu State Police Command was contacted for further information, the Command’s spokesperson DSP Daniel Ndukwe, said he was not aware of the incident.
He said, “honestly I don’t have any such report.”
