The vibrant city of Birnin Kebbi came alive from November 18 to 23, 2024, as the Gwandu Emirate hosted its renowned Cultural Fiesta, featuring the much-anticipated Horse Racing and Horse Festival.
The event showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Gwandu Emirate and attracted an impressive array of dignitaries, traditional rulers, and cultural enthusiasts from across Nigeria.
One of the distinguished attendees was His Royal Majesty Oba Adekunle Adeagbo, the Oore of Otun Ekiti, a first-class monarch from the Moba Local Government Area of Ekiti State. As a special guest, the Oore expressed immense delight at the grandeur of the festival, which he described as an eye-opener to the immense potential of Nigeria’s cultural diversity.
In his remarks, Oba Adeagbo highlighted the significance of cultural festivals like the Gwandu Emirate Cultural Fiesta in fostering unity, preserving tradition, and stimulating economic growth. “Events such as this are not just celebrations of our heritage but vital instruments for economic development. They attract tourism, create jobs, and provide opportunities for cultural exchange,” he said.
The Gwandu Emirate Cultural Fiesta is renowned for its spectacular display of equestrian skills and horsemanship, a tradition deeply rooted in the Emirate’s history. Participants and spectators were treated to thrilling horse races, dazzling horseback stunts, and colorful cultural performances, reflecting the pride and artistry of the Gwandu people.
Adding to the prestige of the event was the presence of other prominent first-class monarchs, including His Royal Majesty Alhaji Dr. Yahaya Abubakar, the Chairman of the Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, and the Chairman of the Taraba State Council of Traditional Rulers. Their attendance underscored the importance of cultural festivals as a unifying force across Nigeria’s diverse regions.
The Governor of Kebbi State, Mohammed Nasir, graced the occasion and emphasized his administration’s commitment to promoting cultural tourism as a means of boosting the state’s economy. Governor Nasir commended the Gwandu Emirate for its efforts in preserving its rich heritage and promised continued support for such initiatives.
The host of the festival, His Royal Majesty Major General Mohammed Iliyasu (Rtd.), played a pivotal role in ensuring the success of the event. The retired military general, known for his dedication to promoting peace and development within his domain, welcomed the guests with warmth and hospitality, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and celebration.
For Oba Adeagbo, the experience was both enlightening and inspiring. He noted the similarities between the cultural practices of the Gwandu Emirate and other regions in Nigeria, emphasizing the shared values of respect, unity, and community. “As Nigerians, we have a duty to celebrate and uphold our cultural heritage. It is through festivals like this that we can truly appreciate our diversity and harness it for national development,” he stated.
The Gwandu Emirate Cultural Fiesta concluded with a call for greater investment in cultural tourism and preservation. The event not only entertained but also served as a reminder of the richness of Nigeria’s traditions and the role they can play in shaping a brighter future for the nation.
