Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, who was the vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, has announced that he is leaving the party and will join the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
He made this announcement on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today. According to him, his decision was based on ongoing internal crisis, unresolved disagreements, and changes in the party’s direction.
Baba-Ahmed explained that the Labour Party is no longer the same as it was when he first joined. He said the party had moved away from its original values and principles, which influenced his decision to leave.
Speaking during the interview, he also mentioned that certain actions taken within the party leadership made things difficult for him, especially in recent times. He noted that these developments contributed to the growing tension and lack of unity within the party.
He confirmed that his resignation will take effect at midnight, after which he will officially become a member of the PRP. He described the PRP as a party with strong historical roots and clear ideological direction.
The Peoples Redemption Party was founded in 1978 by the late Aminu Kano and is widely known for its progressive ideas and focus on grassroots development.
Baba-Ahmed said the party’s long-standing commitment to the welfare of ordinary Nigerians influenced his decision to join.
Baba-Ahmed gained national attention as the running mate to Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party platform. Their campaign attracted significant support, especially from young Nigerians and urban voters seeking political change.
His exit from the Labour Party is expected to spark reactions within Nigeria’s political space, as it comes at a time when the party is facing internal challenges and leadership disputes.
Political observers believe his move could have an impact on the alignment of opposition forces ahead of future elections.
